Natural Gas is Environmentally Responsible

With a renewed focus on the environment, it's time to remember that natural gas is not only the best choice for your home, but for the planet that's home to all of us.

Doing the Right Thing

If you want to do what's right for the environment while enjoying the comforts of home, look to natural gas. The reasons to choose natural gas go far beyond performance.

Natural gas is more environmentally attractive than other fossil fuels because it is composed mainly of methane -- a molecule made up of one carbon atom and four hydrogen atoms. When methane is burned completely, the principal products of combustion are carbon dioxide and water vapor.

What about Other Sources of Energy?

In comparison, oil and coal compounds have much more complicated molecular structures. They include a higher ratio of carbon, as well as various sulfur and nitrogen compounds. They do not burn as cleanly. Coal and industrial fuel oil combustion also produce ash particles, which do not burn at all; however, they can be carried into the atmosphere. Because natural gas burns cleanly, its use can be an effective means of controlling pollution.

Natural gas represents the only clean energy option of adequate scale that can be used to begin making improvements in our air quality in the next 10 years.

Decreasing Our Carbon Footprint

Natural gas combustion results in virtually no atmospheric emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and far lower emissions of carbon monoxide (CO), reactive hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides (NOx) and carbon dioxide than combustion of other fossil fuels.

When compared to the average all-electric home, the average natural gas home emits 46% less carbon.

With natural gas, our clean-energy future may be closer than we think.
