Natural gas service interrupted for about 600 customers in Taunton

May 03, 2018

Natural gas service was interrupted this morning to approximately 600 Columbia Gas of Massachusetts customers in Taunton due to a hit line by a third party. The area is safe and Columbia Gas crews are working to restore service. We appreciate our customers’ patience and understand this is an inconvenience to them.

Once the system is repaired and all meters have been turned off, natural gas can be reintroduced into the system.  Following that, Columbia Gas crews will begin restoring individual service to customers. Columbia Gas employees will work to restore service and relight appliances in homes and businesses as quickly as possible.

Restoring natural gas service requires Columbia Gas crews to access impacted customers’ homes and businesses to complete a safety inspection and relight appliances. This could take approximately 30 minutes per home.

See a video explaining our relight process.

As customers plan for service to be restored, please note that:

  • By law and for safety reasons, only Columbia Gas employees and contractors are permitted to restore service.
  • An adult must be present at the home to allow Columbia Gas workers to restore service.
  • If impacted customers are planning to leave their homes, Columbia Gas asks that contact or access information be left with a neighbor or on the customer’s door so that our crews can gain access to the home to reestablish service.
  • Columbia Gas employees and contractors carry photo IDs and will be happy to show them on request. If customers have any questions about an employee or contractor at their home, please don’t hesitate to call our customer service line at 800-688-6160.

Customers that have special needs or medical concerns should contact Columbia Gas at 1-800-525-8222. If you have a medical emergency, dial 911.
