A Message To Our Customers

We are privileged to serve over 315,000 of our friends and neighbors, and our employees are always looking for ways to improve their lives. Today we recognize LIHEAP Action Day, by raising awareness among our customers, employees and our key stakeholders of the impact that Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, better known as LIHEAP, has on our most vulnerable customers.

What is LIHEAP?

LIHEAP is also referred to as fuel assistance. It assists our income-eligible customers with their energy costs, bill payment assistance, energy crisis assistance and home weatherization. LIHEAP also helps bridge the gap for a family suffering a sudden loss of employment, unexpected medical emergency or the passing of a parent.


  • More than 70% of homes receiving LIHEAP assistance have at least one vulnerable person: a senior, a child under 5, or an individual with a disability.
  • Nationally, 1 in 5 LIHEAP recipients are veteran households.
  • Last winter, LIHEAP helped 23,604 households in Massachusetts and over 170,000 across the Columbia Gas/NiSource, our parent company, footprint.

How Columbia Gas Advocates for LIHEAP

NiSource and Columbia Gas play a leadership role in LIHEAP Action Day by visiting congressional offices and sharing the stories of our communities and customers to urge continued support of the program.

But there are also little things YOU can do to make a difference.

  • Share: We have more LIHEAP-eligible customers than there is money to assist. If you know someone who may qualify, you can direct him or her to Columbia Gas at 1-800-688-6160 for more information or to begin the process of signing up.
  • Engage: We will be sharing more information on social media. "Like" and "Share" the content in your own social networks to potentially reach others who may qualify for assistance. You can follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Linkedin.
